It's no secret that no matter how hard women try in the workplace, in politics, etc., inequality will persist always. Throughout American history, the oppression of women has had detrimental effects on humanity. Some men believed that viewing women as deserving of equal opportunities was a threat to them because all the rules would change. However, the 1900s saw a change in this trend, as women began to fight and defend their rights. Women have been on the front lines of this conflict, but ultimately, they are only asking for “the power or privilege to which they are entitled.” So how did the role of women in society change from 1919 to 1941? Society changed greatly during World War I and throughout the 1920s. In the 1910s, women lacked freedom and equality, life was like a never-ending rule book. Women were expected to behave modestly and wear long dresses. Long hair was obligatory, but it always had to be worn up. It was unacceptable for them to smoke and they must always be accompanied by an older woman or a married woman when going out. Women typically worked in jobs typically associated with their gender, such as servants, seamstresses, secretaries, and nurses. However, during the war, women began to be employed in different types of jobs, such as factory work, replacing men who had gone to fight in Europe. By the late 1910s, the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA) had been fighting for decades for women's right to vote. Since women had contributed greatly to the war effort, it was difficult to refuse their demands for political equality.
