Essay / discover the third man - 1371
Although many things distinguish people from each other, there is one thing that connects every human being: destination. No matter how differently two people live their lives, they will both end it with death. Although it is impossible to avoid this destination, could prolonging it be a capacity of all human beings? A phenomenon that is gripping the planet does just that, allowing people to see another day even after looking death in the eye. Better known as the guardian angel, this phenomenon of what we now call the third man is just that, a guardian angel. As explained in the documentary “The Angel Effect,” the name of this miraculous survival tool comes from the first appearance of this ghost. Sir Ernest Shackleton's 1916 Arctic expedition ended with him and his crew stuck in the ice for more than ten months. To survive, the crew must venture 680 miles through the frigid Arctic air to a nearby whaling station. After surviving the voyage, Shackleton wrote that a mysterious presence guided them to the safety of the whaling station. Shackleton's story expands to give the phenomenon the name of the third man ("The Angel Effect"). Since his story years ago, the third man is said to have saved lives everywhere. James Sévigny, a mountain climber, once managed to steer his boat away from the rocky shores of death and lived to tell his story with the help of the third man. Years ago, Sévigny found himself climbing the isolated depths of the Canadian Rocky Mountains when an avalanche suddenly disrupted the peace of the mountain. As the snow rolled down the mountain, it threw Sévigny and his partner approximately 2,000 feet. Finally, Sévigny woke up and discovered blood coming from his deceased friend... middle of paper... the real avatar » 1). As Blanke explains, this data shows the success of his team's work. He believes their avatars trigger more reactions than other experimental studies. Because of the difference in results, Blanke's team may be getting closer and closer to proving their theory that the third man is a computer error of the brain. In fact, in a CNN article about the third man, it says that scientists are able to create this phenomenon in their laboratories, but they don't have the same sense about it as those who come to help people in situations where their lives are in danger (Blake 2). Since Blanke's method is becoming more and more successful than any other, could this mean that his theory is close to being proven? While many people may believe that Blanke is right, many may argue that there is still no evidence that his theory, or any other theory, is correct.
