Essay / Cambodia's Education System - 1018
Many years of war have had a major impact on Cambodia's education system. Under the Khmer Rouge regime, teachers and all other educated people were killed, schools were destroyed and books were burned. This has created countless obstacles to the point of calling into question Cambodia's ability to provide access to quality education for youth. The lack of schools, exceptionally in slums like Phnom Penh, results in high numbers of young children with little or no access to basic education. For these young children, lack of education can mean a life of poverty, limited opportunities and poor health. In these slums, poverty forces these children to drop out of school to provide for their families. Many families cannot afford to transport their children to school. Instead of letting them continue their studies, they make them work for low wages. To compensate for these inequalities in Phnom Penh, the NGO Attitude Center for Education (ACE) is working to implement free education programs for young people. ACE's main goal is to provide young people with the confidence and leadership skills to bring positive change to Cambodia. ACE strives to create a generation of leaders and helps young people become effective role models in their communities. Strengths The Attitude Center for Education (ACE) is a local Cambodian organization that works to serve hundreds of young children in the slums of Phnom Penh. They aspire to provide quality learning and access to quality education to disadvantaged young people. ACE works closely with the community, parents, volunteers and other local organizations like Empowering Youth in Cambodia, Empowering Communities, New Future for Children and many others......... middle of paper.. ....created with the hope of inspiring young people and teaching them leadership skills so they can make change in their state or community. With education being the key to the future, ACE strives to provide leadership training to underprivileged youth in Phnom Penh with limited resources and hopes to create the leaders of tomorrow. Mandela once said: “Education is the most powerful weapon that can be used to change the world, a country or a community” (2003). Education is a weapon that human beings should be armed with for the good of society, as it enables each individual to use acquired skills, talents and knowledge to innovate new technologies and create a better economy. This gives individuals the opportunity to create a better standard of living. On the one hand, it teaches individuals how to be “free.” This allows these individuals to use their intellect to interpret the universe..
