William Faulkner's short story "A Rose For Emily" opens the reader to the isolated, strange and depressing life of Miss Emily Grierson seen through the eyes of people from the town and told through one of the locals. The mystery and curiosity of others is highlighted early on in the story when the reader is informed of Miss Emily's death. From the first sentences, a tone of darkness and curiosity is felt in the short story. This tone helps pique the reader's interest in the main character's reclusive life and enhances the story as it moves toward its climax. Miss Emily lives such an isolated life that very few people are a part of. The events that occur and her actions in the story inspire the townspeople to talk and wonder about her and her house. People are eager to peek into the deceased's home recently and a story quickly begins to reveal why people are so fascinated with Miss Emily. Faulkner's use of a curious, talkative, dark tone helps establish Miss Emily's opinion with those who live around her and reveal the already known details she has hidden in her home. A subtle tone throughout the story is that of curiosity or inquisitiveness. . This is done through the interrogations of the inhabitants and also when the narrator says he is downright curious. From the first paragraph it is clear that the townspeople are not interested in Miss Emily's funeral but want to get a glimpse of her house which has not been visited in years. The dark tones suggest throughout the story that people already know the fate of the man she loved and give clues as to why this may have happened.
