Essay / Islamic Insurance and Conventional Insurance
1.0 INTRODUCTIONIslamic insurance, also known as takaful, is a product and services that guarantee and protect its consumers against risks according to the Islamic principle. Both Islamic insurance and conventional insurance use the same concept which uses the notion of guarantee. There are also differences between takaful and conventional, with takaful being based on Sharia compliance, while conventional being based on the principle of risk-taking and speculation. Muslim jurists have generally agreed that the concept of insurance is not in contradiction with the principles of Sharia law and has also been accepted by Islam and the Holy Prophet. According to Islam and Assurance (2007), Islam calls for the protection of certain fundamental rights which are the right to protect religion, the right to protect life, the right to protect dignity or honor, the right to protect property and the right to protect the mind. Nowadays, the public is more concerned about safety and security, whether for themselves or their families. So, the consumer must understand the concept before purchasing insurance and choosing the appropriate product that benefits them. There are many differences between Islamic and conventional insurance and through these differences the consumer has his own understanding and opinion towards the insurance product. An insurance agent and the industry have the main role of allowing the consumer to better know and understand each insurance product.
