However, those who possess true leadership qualities are rare – and Napoleon possessed the will and ambition to exploit these qualities to their full potential. Napoleon was the hero of 19th-century France, restoring the country to its former glory after the violence, instability and unrest of the French Revolution. Napoleon was the classic underdog, originally considered a "second-rate Frenchman" due to his Corsican origins, but who achieved success through hard work and determination. He demonstrated the most improbable capacity for resilience; Even though he was defeated several times, he persevered and always refused to surrender. Additionally, Napoleon was a protector and defender of “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity” through the promotion of religious freedom and the nationwide enforcement of French laws throughout his reign.
