Essay / Effects of Corporal Punishment on Children - 1938
When a man is unhappy with something his partner says or does and he hits her, our society calls it abuse. If a mother hits her child, our society calls it spanking. Whatever terminology is used to define corporal punishment, it means the same thing. The whole idea of physical discipline relies on an adult using their larger physique and power to intimidate and force someone much smaller and weaker into submission (Rathis, 2007). In Western culture, they publicly frown on people who use their physical power to dominate someone smaller, but when it comes to their children, they take a pass, turn their heads, and call it spanking (Ray, 2008). It is difficult to understand why society continues to object to the spanking of children. Many people agree that children and adults should not use physical force against each other; However, people strongly object to the question of whether it is acceptable for adults to spank children. When will our society reach a position where everyone agrees that a child's body belongs to them and that their body is exploited, despite how others define abuse? Spanking leads to many problems such as lower IQ scores, mental/emotional problems, physical abuse, and damaged parent-child bonds resulting from ineffective punishment. There is only one short story, but very interesting, dealing with the negative impact of spankings. The negative impact of spanking on a child was discussed in the late 1900s, when the United Nations adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which specifies that a child has the freedom to be excluded from sexual and economic exploitation. (NewsDash, 2010). One hundred and ninety-three countries have signed on to uphold the treaty because they believe ... middle of paper ... attracts attention. Time outs work because they give parents time to calm down and provide a neutral place for the child (Spencer 2001). Parents should think twice when it comes to disciplining their children because spankings are not always the answer. Spankings can hurt children, causing them to become aggressive, have lower IQs than children who are not spanked, and develop mental and emotional problems. Spanking can also damage the bond between a parent and child and lead to physical abuse and violence. Overall, spankings are ineffective because they only stop a behavior momentarily. That being said, parents should find other ways to punish their children because spanking leads to many problems and harms. Knowing all the effects a spanking can have on a child, many people may turn to other disciplinary techniques listed above..
