A simple solution could be for the public to use the following three Rs: reduce, reuse and recycle. The “period of opportunism” has driven far too many single-use items. Many hospitals in the United States, however, have begun reprocessing items once known as single-use goods. Blood pressure cuffs, as well as pulse oximeters, which test patients' heart rate and blood oxygen levels, are among the items sterilized and collected (Cohn 1). With revenue from proper recycling, medical waste can be minimized. There are basically several items that are unintentionally placed in the medical waste group where they don't, in fact, fit. Products such as sheets and pillowcases, which are free of blood, can be recycled without being medical waste. This simple action would help reduce the volume of waste transported to incinerators and, in turn, the magnitude of pollutants released into the system.
