The key word for this technology is Geography – this means that part of the data is spatial. In other words, data that refers in one way or another to locations on Earth. This data is generally associated with tabular data called attribute data. Attribute data can be generally defined as additional information about each of the spatial characteristics. An example of this would be schools. The actual location of schools depends on spatial data. Additional data such as the name of the school, the level of education taught and the ability of the students would constitute the attribute data. It is the partnership of these two types of data that allows GIS to be such an effective problem-solving tool through spatial analysis. GIS is more than software. People and methods are combined with geospatial software and tools, to enable spatial analysis, management of large data sets and display of information in cartographic/graphical form. GIS helps people in life and more than 50 applications are used in life. GIS-based telecommunications and network services can be an excellent planning and decision-making tool for telecommunications industries. GDi GISDATA enables wireless telecommunications organizations to integrate geographic data into complex network design, planning, optimization, maintenance and activities. This technology enables telecommunications to enhance a variety of applications such as engineering applications, customer relationship management and location-based services. GIS can be used to create effective and efficient agricultural techniques. It can also analyze soil data and determine: what are the best crops to plant?, where should they go? how to maintain nutrition levels to best benefit from the crop to be planted?. It is fully integrated and widely accepted to help government agencies manage programs that support farmers and protect the environment. This could increase food production in different parts of the world and thus avoid the global food crisis. Today, well-developed GIS systems are used to protect the environment. It has become an integrated, well-developed and effective tool in disaster management and mitigation. GIS can assist in risk management and analysis by displaying areas at risk of natural or man-made disasters. When such disasters are identified, preventive measures can be developed. IT helps document the need for federal disaster relief funds, if applicable, and can be used by insurance agencies to help assess the monetary value of property losses. A local government must map flood risk areas to assess the potential level of flooding in the surrounding area. Damage can be well estimated and shown using digital maps.
