  • Essay / The Negative Effects of Technology on Society - 1091

As students become more dependent on technological tools, they are more likely to do the majority of their writing on social media. Text messages, social media, and email become the primary means of communication, shortening communication and causing students to get used to leaving out punctuation and using abbreviations (2, p.1). Negative outcomes caused by the use of technology pose a serious threat to the use of formal writing. Students are more likely to make grammatical errors due to the added spell check and autocorrect features on smart devices and computers, which automatically correct misspelled words. Becky Atwood, Adult Education and Literacy Program Coordinator at Cape Town Public School, writes: “Technology has affected students’ ability to write and draft coherently. They must learn what they may have already known, or acquire new skills that they have never mastered, because they are used to writing informally…” (2 p.4). The negative impacts of technology on writing are real. Technology dependence and use prevents students from developing their writing skills, and it shows. Writing teachers are beginning to see a difference in the quality of students' writing, as well as their impatience with writing.
