Task 1 – Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of discourse ethics and ethics (Fisher, Lovell, and Valero-Silva, Chapter 3). Use these approaches to evaluate how they might be used by the manager to decide whether BASF should move forward with building the plant at Beaufort Country Park. Business ethics? Business ethics is a moral principle that distinguishes right from wrong and helps determine individual action as well as corporate behavior. The Oxford Dictionary of Economics definition of business ethics defines it as “the study of the standards that businesses should observe in their dealings, beyond compliance with the letter of the law.” From this it can be assumed that compliance with the law, although an essential starting point, might not be enough to behave ethically, but that it might be necessary to renounce certain commercial interests. Companies attempt to meet this demand by defining their core values and standards in their own Statement of Business Principles. Additionally, many companies have created voluntary codes of best practice that regulate practices within their industry sector. These codes are developed in consultation with governments, employees, local communities and other stakeholders. Businesses have the best opportunities to transform people's lives and lay the foundation for eradicating poverty by generating economic growth. All businesses need to make a profit and it must be recognized that this objective must be taken into account ethically. A business must therefore remain in tune with the wishes of the societies it serves, otherwise it runs the risk of alienating its shareholders/stakeholders and customers. Kant believed that otherwise the action would be considered immoral. From an ethical perspective, the director of BASF in Scenario 1 should not continue construction of the plant at Beaufort Country Park as director and, by extension, the company would not behave ethically. That said, it would be possible to use discourse ethics to communicate with developers and try to reach common ground, which is ethical. Perhaps the ideal situation would be to have an open dialogue between the communities of Beaufort County, including potential workers, the Governor of Southern California and the developers of "Hilton Head", as well as their frequent visitors. Through open and honest discussion, there could be a possibility for the BASF factory to open in coastal South Carolina?References
