Essay / Plot Summary of Where The Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls
Where the Red Fern Grows is a very good book. I would rate this book 9/10 because it was super interesting but there were some very confusing and boring parts. It was about a boy named Billy and his 2 hunting dogs and his adventures with his beloved dogs living their eventful lives. Say no to plagiarism. After working for months to earn $50 to buy 2 dogs, he finally ordered them with the help of his grandfather. He walks more than 50 miles to the nearest town to collect them. From that moment on, he loved his dogs more than anything. Old Dan and Little Ann, his new dogs, quickly become natural dogs after barely being trained. The determination of Billy and his dogs allowed them to become known as the best coon hunters in the country. They had to overcome many challenges while hunting, for example, one evening Billy and his dogs were dragging a raccoon across the river when the raccoon began to push Old Dan into the freezing water. Little Ann went to help him but wasn't strong enough. After the raccoon escaped, Old Dan found himself stuck in the mud underwater. Billy knew time was running out and he came up with the most outrageous plan ever: putting the lantern handle on a stick to get Old Dan out of the mud. Just the little extra length of the lantern ended up saving Old Dan. Such obstacles strengthened the relationship between the puppies and Billy. One day, his grandfather decided to enter him in a raccoon hunting tournament. Billy, his father, his grandfather and his puppies went camping for 2 days. The day they arrived, they organized a beauty contest. Billy decided to enter Little Ann. On short notice, Billy didn't have much time to clean it but he did his best. The competition was between 2 dogs, a much larger dog and Little Ann. After a final decision, the judges presented Billy with a small silver cup for his victory. The hunting tournament brought out 4 groups each evening for 5 nights. Billy was on the 4th night and captured 4 coons. The next night another team also captured 4 coons. The following night, Billy and his opponent faced off to a tiebreaker. Billy, his family, their judge and his dogs are gone. After picking up 2 coons, a heavy snowstorm broke out. During this time, almost nothing could be seen or heard because of the wind. But old Dan's determination kept them going. Soon they could no longer find the puppies and were very worried. Everyone told Billy to give up his dogs, but he didn't. Billy prayed that God would give him an idea. Billy suddenly had an idea of Him. They kept firing the gun so his dogs would know their location. They finally found Little Ann but Old Dan kept track of the stubborn one. Little Ann led them a few miles toward Old Dan and found him barking at a tree. They fired the gun but instead of 1 coon coming out of the tree, 3 coons appeared! They had 2 but 1 got away. After skinning them, they realized that Grandpa was not with them. They searched for him for at least an hour until they found him lying on the ground, unconscious, with a broken ankle. They took him back to camp with the coons and discovered that the other hunter only had 2 coons and had arrived early because of the storm. Billy and his dogs had won. The next morning he received.
