And that's when they went to war, but Southerners had fought for Southern independence. And slaves had to work on huge plantations which, once started, 400 million Africans returned to slave labor. Slavery was a manly legacy in the Southern economy, which was predominantly white and represented a very small population. The slaves they had could be traded or rented, they had to go to large plantations and pick cotton for hours and until the master told them to stop. But northern immigrants from Ireland and Germany in the 1850s were mostly paid the lowest wages. They also needed an institution of slavery. The Dred Scott decision involved a slave named Dread Scott and he was trying to get help from the American legal system because it would not allow anyone with African blood to be an American citizen. They denied African Americans, which caused the Missouri Compromise of 1820. State's rights was not a struggle between the federal government and the individual states for political power, but for the main issue .
