    I cursed under my breath as I pulled my foot out of the thick mud of dirt and grass that had engulfed my shoe. The vibrant pattern of volts was now hidden under a layer of earthy gravel. As I kept my foot in the air to collect what style remained, I noticed the deeply embedded imprint I had left in the mud – an unmistakable swoosh imprinted in the dirt. In my frustration, I found myself blaming the floor rather than myself for this little incident. The funny thing about the ground is that it rarely moves. I treated the earth, the grass, and all its tiny inhabitants as objects over which I was somehow sovereign, much like the way Michael Pollan once viewed plants in his book Botany of Desire. It was then that I realized that the imprint I left could be just as detrimental to the patch of grass as it was to my shoe. I own a wide variety of Nike shoes and use a different pair at least once a day, every day. Each style appeals to me in a different way and brings me its own sense of security: support on the pitch thanks to my KD Precision Timing, barefoot feeling on the track thanks to my Flyknit Racers and comfort on the job thanks to my Roshe Runs to name a few. a few. Just like my shoe, all objects leave their own impressions on the world – uprooting their own form of mud and leaving behind their own imprint. Through an exploration of the production, use and disposal of Nike shoes, I will discover the footprints they leave behind and, more importantly, the path they follow into the future. The life of a Nike shoe begins with its design – what it will look like, who will buy it and how it will be used.
