Essay / Comparing and Contrasting Two Colonialist Writers
Rudyard Kipling, born December 30, 1865 in Bombay, India, was a professor of architectural sculpture and an artist. Kipling spent most of his youth in India and was later sent to England by his parents for further education. It was there that Kipling gained a wealth of experience of colonial life. Kipling made significant contributions to English literature through his various works, including short story writing, novel writing, and his contributions to poetry. In England, he lived a miserable life due to victimization by beatings and mistreatment and later suffered from attacks of insomnia. His writings are remembered for his celebration of imperialism in Britain, his poems and his English tales in verse and prose in the late 19th and 20th centuries. British imperialism is evident in India, based on Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli's coined quote that the "crown jewel" of the empire is India. On the other hand, Joseph Conrad, born in Berdichev on December 3, 1857, was a novelist; Born in Poland (Merriman 1). Joseph was considered one of the greatest English novelists, although he did not speak English fluently and had a Polish accent until his twenties. He was a master of the prose style and brought a sense of un-English sadness into English literature. We can also see in Conrad's works that colonialism is a scourge imposed on an indigenous people. Various similarities can be derived from the works of Rudyard Kipling and Joseph Conrad on their writing careers. To begin with, Rudyard Kipling and Joseph Conrad both made contributions to English literature through their depictions of colonialism. They both wrote short stories and novels...... middle of paper ......y atmospheric, sometimes compared to Kipling Rudyard (Merriman 1). On the other hand, Kipling, after leaving his native country for England and the difficult life after the mistreatment, made him desperately unhappy with this experience which influenced and colored his later writings.
