  • Essay / Predatory mite fauna of Punjab - 1653

Mites belonging to the stigmaeidae family are known predators against phytophagous mites and small soft-bodied insects. A study was carried out to explore the predatory mite fauna of Punjab (Pakistan), a new species of predatory mites of the genus Eustigmaeus (Eustigmaeus hooriaae) was collected from Ameen Pur Bangla, 20 miles north of Faisalabad district (Punjab) from Triticum aestivum (straw pod) by Bilal Saeed Khan and described here in this manuscript. Specimens were mounted on glass slides using Hoyer's medium. Drawings of different body parts were made using an eye grid in a high-power microscope. These specimens were compared to species already described. A description of the ceremonial, an illustration of the main body parts, the host range and remarks for comparison are also given. Eighteen (18) paratype females were collected. Twelve (12) data from the same collection and six (6) were collected from RYKhan from leaf litter. All specimens were deposited at the Acarology Research Laboratory, Department of Agriculture. Entomology, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, Pakistan. Keywords: Stigmaeidae, Acari, Eustigmaeus, new species, predatory miteINTRODUCTIONEustigmaeus is one of the largest genera of stigmaeidae and contains more than eighty species. Eustigmaeus was initially a subgenus of the genus Stigmaeus, based on Stigmaeus kermesinus Koch, 1841 (Berlese 1910), but was later elevated to generic level (Oudemans, 1923 a). The same year, Oudemans (1923 b) established the genus Ledermuelleria, but his definition is literally a repetition of that of Eustigmaeus. The problem had not been resolved over the next 50 years, until Wood (1973) re-examined two specimens named Stigmaeus kermesinus in...... middle of article...... hten, 6 (129): 138-144.
