  • Essay / Prison Crime - 1944

Jail crimes have been a part of our prisons since prisons themselves were developed. Criminals who end up in an institution are almost certain to commit crimes while incarcerated. Prisons have come a long way over the years, and through trial and error, they have discovered many effective ways to help reduce crime rates. Mail is monitored and read on occasion and constitutes an inmate privilege which can be withdrawn. Although many of the new policies and procedures have proven effective, it is well-trained staff that helps reduce crime. Crime in our prisons has decreased, and having adequate staffing in these facilities plays a crucial role in reducing crime. By providing officers with intensive, paramilitary training, crime rates are falling in our prisons (http://www.azcorrections.gov/adc/policy). Using appropriate tactical verbal skills with inmates allows staff to calm them down in a variety of ways. Through verbal communication between officers, we reduce inmate-on-inmate assaults as well as inmate-staff assaults. We could all say that the problems in our prisons are gang-related, which might be the case; however, some of these crimes may be linked to contraband entering correctional facilities. Having well-trained and appropriate staff to process all mail entering our facilities helps slow the possible passage of contraband into our prisons (http://www.azcorrections.gov/adc/policy). Many will try to sneak any type of illegal contraband into these inmates on a daily basis so they can sell it. Since these packages may contain contraband, each piece of mail is carefully checked for any type of drugs or weapons. Letters are also read and sent in the middle of the paper. Established rules will allow the prison to operate in a controlled environment and ultimately keep crime down, both inside and outside the prison walls. . (Copyright 2011).
