Essay / The Importance of Social Media - 701
Since the beginning of the social media craze, it seems that people have become distant from each other due to their constant use of it. Even though social media allows us to connect and communicate much more quickly than before, true face-to-face interaction should be what remains most important to how we socialize. With the constant use of social networking sites, we are driven to stay indoors and glue our eyes to the screens of our electronic devices. Staying indoors not only prevents us from socializing with the real world, but it can also affect our lives in negative ways. Experts say that spending too much time indoors without face-to-face interaction can affect us both socially and physically. This can lead to becoming antisocial, causing us to lose close friends and family. Social networking sites give us the ability to share thoughts, photos or videos at any time. In Garry Thrudeau's Doonesbury comic strip, he shows how a young woman is so worried about what's happening online that she tells her father who probably doesn't care at all about what she says. This shows how social media is increasingly distancing us from family, as we are always so focused on our screen rather than soaking up the real social atmosphere we find ourselves in. Like in real life, social networking sites have given us the ability to decide who we want. choose to connect with. For those who tend to spend more time online than average, they seem to trust people online much more than people they know personally. As Deresiewicz mentions in the article Fake Friendship, “Friends can be the family we choose.” Some of these people actually... middle of paper ... had fake relationships and had no idea. Real face-to-face interaction should always come first before taking anything to a serious level, especially in relationships. Even though social media allows us to meet people from different parts of the country or even the world, it is considered that meeting people personally is just for security reasons. With the way things are seen today, it can be said that many people are addicted to updating their social networking sites; whether it's students in class, people in a meeting, or somewhere in public, there will always be a group of people who are constantly looking at their electronic device. People are making it clear that whatever is on their phone is much more important than the people around them. Everyone should just put away their phone or get out of their house and cherish their surroundings..
