Essay / A Personal Account at the Greensboro Youth Council Community Service Project
When we think about the true meaning of community service, two very important terms come to mind: learning and giving. Community service is generally associated with giving one's time to help someone else, whether they are in need or not, and learning from those experiences. We rarely see it as an opportunity to discover more about ourselves. Say no to plagiarism. Get a tailor-made essay on “Why Violent Video Games Should Not Be Banned”? The Greensboro Youth Council, a local organization run by high school students, hosts various events throughout the year for neighboring communities, ranging from distributing Christmas toys to underprivileged children, to the annual Halloween party and at the famous GYC carnival which attracts people of all ages. Alongside these larger projects, GYC runs smaller projects like Back to School Explosion, of which I was a staff member. My role in the back to school blast was to make sure all the details were in place as well as making sure everything stayed as planned that evening. I felt truly honored to serve my community by volunteering at this event as well as spending time outside putting it all together. This is an example of how community service is a form of giving. When planning this event, I not only donated my time, but also my ideas. Community service will allow you to grow and help you become a better person to meet. Community service is rarely seen as an opportunity to learn something valuable or improve one's quality of life. I used to serve meals at a homeless shelter during the summer. At each meal, I would come in, greet the faces I had seen over and over again, and work with a group of volunteers who had come to do the same thing as me. I considered this an act of service to my community and I was very proud of it. It was not long after I abandoned this activity and began other service-type activities that I realized the impact this experience had had on me. While I was there as a food server, I didn't realize how valuable the conversation I had, the friends I made, or the quality of time I spent there would be for me later . I simply participated in community service because I loved doing it and thought it was the right thing to do. I ended up learning a lot more than I could give. I took.
