An Inspector Calls - Synopsis It's a cozy night in spring and the Birling family and Mr. Croft are celebrating the engagement of their daughter Sheila to Mr. Croft. Everything goes so well that the whole family wallows in their pride. There is a knock on the door, an inspector calls. As the inspector begins to break up the party, we begin to understand the story better. The inspector tells the group that there was recently a suicide; by a girl named Eva Smith. He explains to the group how it was their joint action that forced this young girl to commit suicide. Mr Birling, a successful manufacturer, employed Eva Smith in his factory. While working in her factory, Eva Smith went on strike demanding a higher pay raise, resulting in her dismissal. She managed to find a new job in a very popular store within the Birling family. Sheila being the uptight child she was shopping for one day while trying on a certain item of clothing and thought this Eva Smith was smirking at her.
