Essay / The Hero with a Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell
“Using appropriate theory, deconstruct a story to show how it operates psychologically, culturally, and/or ergodically within the interactive text of your choice. » The Hero's Journey (Vogler 2007, p. 8) is a 12-step narrative model refined by Christopher Vogler from Joseph Campbell's book, The Hero with a Thousand Faces (Campbell 2008). This theory can be linked to a multitude of different mediums involving storytelling. The pattern is usually easy to identify in a story, but can sometimes be more difficult to decipher as is the case with the narrative of Bioshock Infinite (Irrational Games, 2013) (Infinite), and for this reason not all of the steps are not mentioned. On a psychological and cultural level, Bioshock Infinite draws the player in, making them connect deeply with the main characters, involving them in the story, and convincing them to continue playing. The first stop on Vogler's hero's journey is the ordinary world. , of which the hero is a normal part. This stage is not evident at the very beginning of Infinite, but comes in the form of a flashback a few minutes into the game. This sequence shows the hero, previously identified as Booker Dewitt, living in a bedroom. Bare hotel with empty bottles scattered everywhere. The Call to Adventure, the second stage, is also displayed through this flashback, as a voice on the other side of the hotel door asks the player to "Bring us the girl and erase debt” (Bioshock Infinite, 2013). . This scene is psychologically designed to pique the player's curiosity, compelling them to continue. It can also be said to evoke feelings of sympathy, as Booker refuses to comply with the demands. The third stage, Refusing the Call, is presented...... middle of paper...... ely, and allows the player to feel vindicated about their modern feelings towards racism. Overall, The Hero's Journey is used effectively throughout Bioshock Infinite's narrative, both psychologically and culturally. ], 2K Games.King, T 2008, Racism's Long and Torturous History Against Afro-Americans, Salem-News.com, accessed April 5, 2014, .Lahti, E, Wilde, T 2013, the end of BioShock Infinite explained and this what we think about it, PC Gamer, accessed March 27, 2014, .Vogler, C 2007, The Writer's Journey, Michael Wiese Productions, California.
