The Future of South Africa Some things in South Africa are getting better as we move into the future, while others are getting worse . The South African government is better. All provisions of the new constitution were in force by 1999. In June 1999, the term of President Nelson Mandela ended and Thabo Mbeki was elected president. There has been a peaceful change of government and Mbeki is doing many things to help the country. Some of these include eliminating hatred between races, ending poverty and reducing violent crime. The government is also electing more people of different races and genders to the National Assembly and the Cabinet. South Africa's economy is the best of any country in Africa and is expected to continue to improve. The South African economy depends mainly on its mineral resources which it exports to many other countries. The South African government has invested in many other industries such as tourism and wine, which are important and fast-growing sectors of the economy. The government is also encouraging businesses to hire more black and colored people (a term used in South Africa for people of mixed racial origin) because they have the highest unemployment rate of any ethnic group in the country.
