Essay / The Drover's Wife: The Hardships of Life in the Outback Australia's most famous. "The Drover's Wife" is probably Lawson's best-known work and was first published in the collection entitled "While the Billy Boils" in 1892. Lawson was deeply interested in the effects of the Australian outback on people's lives, after having himself spent 18 months in the bush. This was expressed in a number of so-called "bush ballads" and stories, "The Drover's Wife" being one of them. This short story is set in the Australian bush or outback. This is what the first two paragraphs reveal, where the author gives a brief and precise description of the small house and the surrounding landscape. However, it is more difficult to tell the time of the story. The text only gives us a few clues as to when this may have happened. The most obvious is: “The drought of 18 ruined it”. At first I thought 18 meant 1918, but given that the short story was written in 1892, that must be wrong. The year mentioned is most likely 1818. The main conflict in "The Herdsman's Wife" may not be as obvious as one might think. At first, it is quite easy to imagine that there is a conflict between the bush woman and the snake. The reason is that the snake poses a threat to the woman. If she doesn't kill it, the snake may bite one of the children, which will be a disaster since it is nineteen miles from the nearest neighbor. The child reportedly died before they could get help. But this conflict is only a consequence of the main conflict, mentioned in a sentence at the beginning of the text: “The herdsman, a former squatter, left with the sheep. my wife and children are left alone here. » The main problem is that the woman finds herself alone facing the difficulties of life in the Australian bush. In my opinion, Lawson uses the incident with the snake to uncover the struggles of bush versus outback women. The point of view used in "The Drover's Wife" is that of the third person. Lawson told the story from the bush woman's point of view. It allows us to see his thoughts and feelings.
