  • Essay / The War Measures Act: Was it Necessary? - 1289

“These men only ask for the same thing, equity and equity only. This, as far as it is in my power, they and all others will have. »-Abraham Lincoln. This quote basically states that everyone wants fairness and the government should do what it can to give it to the people. On the contrary, the War Measures Act actually limits freedom and fairness. The War Measures Act is a law that gives the federal government complete emergency power in the event of war, invasion or rebellion. It allowed the Cabinet to do whatever was necessary for “the security, defence, peace, order and welfare of Canada” (Morton and Granatstein, 1989, p. 7). The law significantly limits the freedom of Canadians. It was used during World War I (1914), World War II (1939) and the October Crisis (1970). This also has a negative effect on the esteem of Canada, which can be considered a hypocritical democratic nation, in which a model nation in peacekeeping has used a totalitarian force such as the War Measures Act. By unfairly punishing Canadian citizens, imposing conscription and being used unnecessarily to respond to perceived threats, the use of the War Measures Act was neither just nor necessary. The unjust punishment of citizens authorized by the War Measures Act was unjust. When used during the First World War, the Second World War and the October Crisis, it led to unjust punishment against Canadians by causing the internment of "enemy aliens" and their obligation to s register with the government. During the First World War, Canada was at war with Germany, Austria, Hungary and Ukraine. Immigration from these countries was therefore suspended and people from these countries were considered "enemy aliens" and were interned. This meant they had to register in the middle of paper......the War Measures Act is not effective, fair or useful. The War Measures Act is unjust and unnecessary due to the unwarranted abuse of Canadian Citizens, limiting conscription and its unnecessary use against apprehended threats. The War Measures Act is unjust and unnecessary because it permitted unjust punishments during two world wars and the October Crisis. He helped with conscription during the First and Second World Wars, which ultimately failed and caused much division and trouble in Canada. Additionally, it took away from citizens the freedoms and rights that Canada is known for. This law was not necessary and was not fair. Fairness is treating people with respect and making decisions without self-interest, and is part of our daily lives. “Treat others as you would like others to treat yourself” – The Golden Rule should always be used to the fullest extent possible..
