Enterprise resource planning systems are “rapidly becoming indispensable for large and medium-sized organizations to manage their operations” (Basu and Lederer, 2004). Therefore, management must be familiar with the ERP process and the many components and complexities that encompass an organization's ERP architecture. Generally speaking, the first chapter of the textbook provides an “overview of information systems, ERP systems and their history, how they started, where they come from and why they exist” (Motiwalla and Thompson, 2011). Essentially, ERP systems roles integrate various information systems processes with the goal of supporting the many functions of an organization. Additionally, this is accomplished through the development of “comprehensive software applications that support critical organizational functions” (Motiwalla & Thompson, 2011). The text discusses the vast evolution of ERP systems and the components that influence ERP architecture. Efficiency is one of the main elements of ERP implementation and therefore, many organizations are looking for this business process alternative with the aim of improving organizational efficiency and worker productivity . The fact that ERP systems have the ability to integrate business processes and functionality across an organizational infrastructure by combining business functions in an integrated software environment makes ERP an attractive option for many organizations. In order to fully understand the evolution of ERP system, we must first analyze how ERP systems are integrated into the business life cycle of organizations. Essentially, organizations were looking for ERP solutions to alleviate the “emphasis on application integration and customer service” (Motiwalla and Thompson, 2011). ...... middle of document ......y ERP implementation model.
