  • Essay / Learning Space Design Brief - 2158

Rationale: This design brief is intended to take into account the results of Heath's VAST (activity-related) heuristic (1989, in Elliott-Burns, 2003) and a selection of Lackney's design principles. (nd). The concepts of traffic flow and planning from Hennah (2007) will be incorporated. The design will also take into account the requirements related to the integration of a guided inquiry pedagogy. Users of the space will also have the opportunity to participate in the process. Heath's VAST heuristic provides a "rich alternative" (p7, 1989, cited in Elliott-Burns, 2005) to a checklist design approach and can be used to evaluate a learning space and drive design of a new one. Heath (1989, in Elliott-Burns, 2005) elaborates on distinct elements that need to be considered when designing living and working spaces. The VAST table relating to activities within a space was used to critically evaluate what was done in the junior section of the library and to generate solutions. Lackney's (n.d.) framework of 33 design principles is intended to serve as a framework of principles around which educators and design practitioners can organize the process and production of designing an educational institution. The 33 principles are derived from educational research and the reflective practices of education and design practitioners (Lackney, n.d.). In this design note, I have chosen to focus on principles 1, 3, 6, 12, 14, 23 and 27 as being most relevant to the context. Hennah (2007) contextualizes a library as a retail store, advising library designers to view users as customers. How space is used and traffic flow in a library can be used to determine hot spots and make connections between library usage and layout. Hennah's recommendations on... middle of paper ...... published April 25, 2010, from School Design Studio: http://schoolstudio.typepad.com/school_design_studio/33-educational-design-pri. htmlLyons, A.
