Essay / Stories Behind the Intricate Compositions: Sculpture...
This article will discuss and compare the sculpture A Faun Teased by Children, from the Italian Baroque style, and the Little Fourteen Year Old Dancer from the French Impressionist style. These two sculptures give us a clear overview and allow us to grasp the moment that is happening. The active movement, strong diagonals and dramatic facial expressions of the characters in A Faun Teased by Children tell the viewer a detailed and vivid story of the actions taking place and the role each character plays, in a mythical scene, while The stagnant, serene pose of the fourteen-year-old girl resonates with calm and a moment that has yet to happen. A Faun Teased by Children is a sculpture chiseled from marble and recrystallized carbonate minerals, in 1616-17 in Rome by Bernini and is also 52 1/8 inches tall. Non-living subjects include the skin of a lion. The scene appears to be the location of a forest or a place where fruitful vegetation is apparent. The sculpture is asymmetrical with active vertical and diagonal accents depicting a scene in media res. All the characters are depicted naked. The two children are shown perched precariously on branches at the top of the tree, in a half-embrace. One of them shoots... middle of paper ... best view of the negative space created by his arms and legs. The best vantage points for observing A Faun Being Teased by Children are the front left corner where you have a clear view of the extent of the faun and each figure in the piece as well as the back of the sculpture. Furthermore, these two sculptures are of medium size. Bernini and Degas used very different materials and mediums to produce very different and compelling compositions that tell interesting stories through carefully executed elements. These careful hands showed the importance of each figure in relation to other figures and the chosen style.
