Essay / The Good, the Bad and the Ugly - 1767
The Good, the Bad and the UglyWestern films are the defining genre of the American film industry, a eulogy to the beginnings of the vast American frontier. They constitute one of the oldest, most enduring and flexible genres and one of the most distinctively American genres in their mythic - they focus on the West - origins in North America. Western films have also been called the horse opera, the oater (quickly made Western short films that became as common as oats for horses), or the cowboy film. The western film genre has depicted much of America's past, glorifying the fading values and aspirations of the West's bygone mythical era. Over time, Westerns have been redefined, reinvented and expanded, rejected, rediscovered and usurped. But most Western film ideas derive from characteristics known to Native Americans and Mexicans long before American culture became aware of them. What you probably think of as a good old American western film comes from a culture known as vaqueros (cowboys for Spanish). These are many of the misrepresentations of cultures and races shown in films as early as the 1920s and in silent films. Although it could be argued that the silent film era was more politically correct than current films, the film industry should not have the right to misrepresent the cultures of Mexicans, Indians and their lifestyles in films known as Western films. The movie I chose is “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.” I first saw this movie about five years ago when I was in high school. I loved the movie, but after watching it, I took a closer look at the stereotypes and generalizations that are represented in various ways, such as language, names, landscapes, and people. I chose this movie because it is famous and very well known among Italians, Americans and Hispanics, not just famous in Hollywood (and because I had a list of obligatory movies that I had to choose from). Watching the movie for the second time, I tried to focus on where the movie takes place in order to show how the lands of Mexico, New Mexico, and Texas became widespread. I also paid attention to the names given to the characters. There is a term used in Hollywood called "the little man wins", but after watching The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, we see that this cliché is not used..
