Essay / Bebe Buell-The Roxy - 839
I have been looking forward to this trip to Hollywood for some time. Imagining the famous Roxy on Sunset with Hollywood decadence and history had been an abiding fascination for me ever since New York rock and roll celebrity Bebe Buell invited me to the West Coast to cover her debut at the venue. Kind of an East Coast Rocker going west if you will. The “UN-Shoreworld”. It's funny that this is her first show at the Roxy, because she pretty much ruled the Sunset Strip in the '70s, but so be it. If there's one thing I always enjoy, it's the adrenaline rush of the performer having something to prove to a whole bunch of people. That still means a cutting-edge show is in the works, and the June 22 performance was proof positive that Bebe Buell never really left Hollywood, she just got busy elsewhere. To understand the level of adulation fans and friends still have for Buell, you just have to do it. showing up to the after party upstairs at On The Rox, another world-famous gaming venue inhabited by Led Zeppelin, John Lennon and Keith Richards, to name a few. The mix of A-list celebrities was indeed impressive and included the likes of Rodney Bingenheimer, Billy Corgan, Frank Infante (Blondie), Eric Erlandson (Hole), Ginger Coyote, NCIS actress Pauley Perrette and the cool Earth -down from his daughter. Liv Tyler. But let's put that aside for a second and talk about the series. With fans glued to the stage, Buell's performance became a combination of a lethal backing band (she whittled it down to a solid quartet) and her credible experience and self-confidence. Watching her grind the mic stand, I could only wonder which icon was responsible for teaching her middle of paper......es. Special props are sent to Giddle Partridge, host of the evening and a fascinating overall artist. This self-imposed "Queen of Hollywood" is said to be linked to Grand 'Ole Opry star Hank Snow as well as the 22nd Vice President of the United States of America, Levi P. Morton. Which is probably why she totally swung and flipped all over the place, cranking out a tasty set for Roxy's patrons, including her new single Gringo Like me and of course my favorite, Bubble Gum New Forever . Go see her if you get the chance, she's wild. Show opener Gary Myrick & the Figures also slammed their opening slot with favorites like “She Talks in Stereo.” Live in a Film and the Language EP, featuring the percussive single "Guitar, Talk, Love & Drums". Myrick is one of the most overlooked guitarists in the country, replacing Stevie Ray Vaughn in the Austin, Texas band Kracker Jack at the time..
