    Advertising is a form of market communication, used to encourage, persuade or manipulate an audience to take or continue to take an action. Any mass media can carry advertising. Some random examples: newspapers, magazines, radio and television shows. In ancient times, Egyptians wrote sales messages on papyrus wall posters and political advertisements were posted on the walls of Pompeii. Simple commercial advertising existed in Greece, Rome, Arabia, Asia, Africa and South America. In the Middle Ages, most people could not read, so when they saw pictures of clothes, shoes, horseshoes or flour sacks on signs, it made them notice the tailor, the shoemaker, the blacksmith or miller. Advertisements promoting drugs and books were printed weekly in newspapers. During the 19th century, advertising expanded as the relative wealth of nations increased.
