Sexism has been extremely prevalent throughout the world since the beginning of agricultural societies. As groups of people abandoned their hunting and gathering practices to concentrate on agriculture, women were no longer needed to keep the group alive. Their role in society was demoted to that of bearing children and therefore they were considered only suitable for housework and were not included in forced labor. This was the beginning of a deep-rooted sexism that continues to this day. We have seen many examples of this throughout history, from the high levels of abuse in ancient Rome, to European witch hunts viciously attacking women and resulting in an estimated 51,000 deaths, to the extreme levels of sexism surrounding modern army, and even until today. Around the world, there are many such cases: high levels of sexual violence in Congo with no punishment for rapists, sexual torture in South America, 2,800 to 3,000 women murdered in the United States per year and 78% sexual offenses within families targeting girls. As Lori E. Amy says, “We ignore the folly of a social order in which the sexual danger we warn them [girls] about is considered normal” (Inherit 153). This modern day sexism comes from years of sexism made acceptable by society. We have seen examples of this in history, but it is still applied in modern times. Advertisements showing men beating their wives were commonplace in the mid-1900s, and laws recognizing marital rape as wrong were not passed until 1978. Women's position has been weak throughout the history and we see through this that it is still a problem today..
