Once you mess up, you can't go back, because you're wanted. Dead or Alive.Sam Bass was born to Daniel and Elizabeth Jane Sheeks Bass on July 21, 1851 near a small town called Mitchell, Indiana. He had a normal early childhood, apart from the fact that he did not attend school. This was normal for children in the mid-1800s, as school was not yet a compulsory activity and most children were like Sam, used to tending the fields and animals on their parents' farm . His childhood deviated from normal when he was only ten years old. His mother died during the birth of her tenth child and three years later, in 1864, Sam's father died. An orphan, he and his siblings went to live with an uncle, and in 1869, before he was 18, he ran away from home. He was looking for a new way of life. For a time he worked in Mississippi for a local sawmill, and after finding this to be unsuccessful, he decided to leave again. So he packed his bags and headed west with no specific destination, and in the summer of 1870 he found himself in Denton, Texas. Here he met a man named Robert Carruth and became a ranch hand on his farm just outside Denton. He soon realized it wasn't the kind of career he wanted to be known for and ended up in Denton, with a new interest in racehorses.
