For over two thousand years, the human race has struggled to effectively establish the foundations of morality. Society has made little progress in distinguishing morally good from evil. Even the most intellectual minds fail to discern the underlying principles of morality. Consensus on morality is far from being achieved. The struggle to create a base resulted in a vigorous war, full of disagreements and disputes. Despite the lack of understanding, John Stuart Mill confidently believes that truths can still have meaning even if society struggles to understand its principles. Mill does a remarkable job of describing morality and for that, the entire essay is a masterpiece. His claims throughout the essay couldn't be closer to the truth. Morality is a topic we often talk about, but what is morality? Not everyone has the same morals, so who is morally right? Morality is an extremely difficult subject to understand, which is why there is no established basis. What many may consider morally right, others may consider morally wrong. Parents, the media and teachers affect many of us, but who is to say that they themselves are right? I constantly question society, but allow others to freely express their opinions. Who am I to judge when no real moral consensus has been reached? On August 6, 1945, the United States became the first to start a nuclear war, instantly killing 80,000 human lives. Many strongly defend the decision and believe that this reduction was both necessary and inevitable. I myself listen to the endless list of reasons, but I ignore them all. Regardless of the billions spent by the United States to create the bomb and save the soldiers' lives, neither... middle of paper ......f is unrecognizable to the naked eye. The standard he refers to is the principle of utility, also called the “greatest happiness principle”. Mill clearly shows that utilitarianism had a great impact in developing a moral basis of principles. From top to bottom, John Stuart Mill presented an incredible essay describing the various unknown complexities of morality. He has a remarkable understanding and appreciation of utilitarianism and throughout the essay the audience is able to grasp a clearer understanding of morality. Morality itself may never be fully defined, but despite the difficulties and lack of definition, it still has meaning. Everyone's moral instinct is different, making it incredibly difficult to discover the foundations of morality. Society may never effectively lay the groundwork, but Mill's essay gives people a good idea.
