Essay / Hard work is not a recipe for success: it's an ingredient
I agree with Sierra from The Phoenix and the Olive Branch, that it's not us, it's you. It's not Millennials who think they're special, it's their parents. It was the parents who presented each child on the team with a participation trophy. These were the parents who promised us that all we needed was to do well in school, attend a top university, and have a happy middle-class career. With the reality of high student debt and the endless stream of unpaid, unpaid, and underpaid internships, it's no wonder that millennials are also desperate to be lied to. But “we can’t go wrong,” the parents say, “this recipe must work, it worked for us.” It must be your fault, you and your generation, you must be too lazy to make this work. All the while, it was much more than their "hard work" that brought them success in their lives, namely the post-World War II prosperity and the sacrifices their parents made.
