  • Essay / Lord of the Flies - 1472

The English writer of the novel, Lord of the Flies, William Golding, was born in 1911 on the Cornish peninsula. Golding was raised thinking he would become a scientist, but after two years studying science at Oxford, he changed his studies from science to English literature, devoting himself to Anglo-Saxon. Before the Second World War he published a volume of poetry, but when war broke out he took a break from his writing and joined the Royal Navy. In the space of five years, he saw everything from battles in the skies to war actions under the deep blue, and took part in Walcheren and D-Day. Golding finished his distinguished career as a lieutenant in command of a rocket. After his military career ended, he began teaching and continued to write. Writing novels, plays and portraits in genres that led him to become a novel prize winner. Genres ranging from survival fiction, adventure, science fiction and historical fiction. The English writer William Golding has even become good educational reading in many schools and colleges. His first published novel written in 1954, Lord of the Flies, is what helped him achieve his big success. A story which carries an adventurist plot which reveals a symbolic scenario; about society and human nature, which indeed welcomed William Golding as a bestselling author in the early 1960s and his listing in the 100 best novels of the modern library. The novel, Lord of the Flies, begins its story with a plane crashing during a war, evacuating a group of British boys to a remote island. Ralph, soon to be leader, and his new round friend Piggy were going to realize their new freedom. As they undressed amid cheers that there were no adults....... middle of paper ...... the leader asked to behave like wild animals. Having demonstrated that these savage actions were acceptable, the group quickly changed their beliefs. Only because that’s what their socialization told them to do. Throughout my readings of the novel, Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding. I was taught a few things about myself and about society. It showed me how easily my leadership can be influenced by peer pressure, just so I can stay in power over my environment. Which is honestly a good thing to take into account, to be able to work on this negative aspect of myself. During my reading, I also saw how society can change a person in no time. One minute they're all alone and working well together, but the next they're at loggerheads and trying to kill each other. Reflecting the importance of good leadership in maintaining a new society.
