Essay / Aldoux Huxley's Brave New World - 1167
Science and technology have a strong influence on the daily lives of the citizens of the World State. The first influence is through the use of drugs and in particular soma. Soma is a drug used worldwide by everyone to create false happiness. When John, Bernard and Helmholtz meet with Mustafa Mond, the head of the world state, Mond explains to them the beneficial effects of simply consuming a single drug daily. “Now you swallow two or three half-gram tablets, and that’s it. Everyone can be virtuous now. You can carry at least half your mortality in a bottle. Christianity without tears, that is what soma is. (Helmholtz, 162) In the world state, there is nothing but praise for the medicine known as soma, as it has no side effects that members of society fear. Science and technology has reached a point where it allows a simple tablet to relieve its citizens of any type of problem they might encounter. Additionally, Soma is produced in large quantities for consumption in order to suppress the understanding of what surrounds members of society. Second, along with Soma consumption, citizens are also influenced by science in daily life by not being able to acquire knowledge. Methods for gaining knowledge include: reading books or anything that promotes an idea. Thanks to technology, the World State prohibits all types of reading. When young children are conditioned to stay away from books, the procedure is presented: “Crumpling the illuminated pages of the books, the principal waited until everyone was happily occupied. Then: “Look carefully,” he said. And, raising his hand, he gave the signal... There was a violent explosion... The children shouted; their faces were distorted by terror. (16) even at a young age...... middle of paper ...... the transfigured roses... There was a violent explosion... The children jumped, shouted; their faces were distorted by terror” (16). This form of conditioning allows children to directly observe what happens when they encounter books or even flowers. They are shocked, which creates fear in the children every time they see the object. Finally, science and technology are used to condition members of society into the egg form of their lives. Describing the different infermaries of each cast, the director explains: “The lower the caste,” Mr. Foster said, “the shorter the oxygen. The first organ affected was the brain. After that, the skeleton. At seventy percent of normal oxygen you get midgets. Less than seventy blind monsters. (12) the lower the caste, the worse the conditions. Works CitedHuxley, Aldous.
