  • Essay / Why Fraternities Should Be Banned - 866

Recently, the idea of participating in a fraternity has become more prevalent. Young adults are captivated by the desire to experience Greek life. Clothes and parties seem to attract teenagers like a magnet. However, what these teenagers don't realize are the terrible things associated with fraternities. Many fraternities have a reputation for turning students into drunks, treating women in a vulgar manner, engaging in violent hazing against other fraternity members, and disrupting the real reason students go to college. For these reasons, fraternities should be completely banned on college campuses. First, fraternities have been found to be a serious reason for underage drinking and binge drinking. These young adults are much less supervised and are eager to exercise their new freedom. According to the U.S. Department of Education's Center for Higher Learning, 75 percent of fraternity members drank heavily, compared to 49 percent of other male students. The same goes for sororities. “Outside the Greek system, 40.9 percent of female students admit to abusing alcohol, while sorority girls drink heavily at a rate of 62.4 percent.” It’s true that fraternities are a great way to make connections in college. It is also true that fraternities offer organized events that help unite the campus community. However, in reality, the only thing fraternities care about is throwing parties out of control. Additionally, the fraternity environment breeds a rape culture on campus. Rape and assault are the most common violent crimes committed on college campuses. Fraternity members objectify women and are more likely to commit sexual assault. Fraternities impose an abusive attitude towards women.
