    IntroductionIn this assignment I will examine four cases, which will require a number of different communication skills focusing primarily on: developing a therapeutic relationship, communicating assertively, communicating effectively with a person with a disability/impairment and communicate with people from another culture. I will discuss building a therapeutic relationship and effective communication with each patient.Part 1: Developing a Therapeutic RelationshipA therapeutic relationship is a professional and interpersonal alliance in which the nurse and client unite for a defined period of time to achieve health-related treatment goals. (Chauhan & Long, 2000), which may only last a short time but is important and significant (Arnold & Boggs, 2011) in building trust, respect and creating an environment between nurse and patient, vital for healing of the patient. process and overall experience in the healthcare setting. I will build a therapeutic relationship with Regina for her pre, peri, and postoperative periods by having a relationship of interdependence known as the I-Thou relationship, based on equality, mutuality, and reciprocity (Buber, 1958). The goal of therapeutic communication skills is not to treat or cure an illness or disorder, but rather to provide a sense of well-being to patients by making them feel relaxed and safe (Arnold & Boggs, 2011 ). As a nurse, I will familiarize myself with Regina's private and personal medical history and provide a safe and private environment for patient-centered and strictly confidential communication for the medical team.
