Wilson Book Review Hurt People Hurt PeopleSummaryWilson's book Hurt People Hurt People is quite interesting, the book is designed to help readers overcome past hurts. Wilson says that from the moment we are born, we begin to ask ourselves questions about living in such cases: “Can I be safe? 2) Can I be me? 3) Can I be accepted? (Wilson, 2001, p. 73) Throughout our lives, these are the questions we will continue to ask until we separate from this world. The first half of the book examines issues a person may have experienced during childhood, such as parental unavailability, shame, physical abuse, sexual abuse, and choices. She then discussed how readers can begin to heal these childhood wounds with the help of counseling and leaning on Christ. Wilson explains her “theory of change”, she says: “Systematically making and implementing new choices produces change” (Wilson, 2001, p. 87). “New choices and consistent practice equal change” (Wilson, 2001, 87). She also uses a HOPE chart which helps in the healing process of all childhood wounds. For the Chart to be used correctly, one must establish the key issues, then seek the truth about the issue, begin to make new choices, and finally integrate it into a new practice of living in truth rather than lies and deception. Between each section of her book, she provides space for the reader to stop and reflect on what has been discussed and pray about the issues that have been considered. It encourages the reader to seek help if they are having difficulty with something that has been reviewed. Wilson uses several different charts relating to each topic she examines and explains how a counselor can implement these charts into counseling sessions. She also uses...... middle of paper ......ling. I will also do this when helping clients who come to me for grief counseling. I think it will help by looking back at childhood wounds and starting to change the thoughts he has about what happened during those years. I think this theory will be one I use when I start counseling because she finds it extremely helpful with all the different charts she uses throughout her book. I really appreciate how she approaches each issue with a prayer to help start the process of moving past the past. I will also use Scripture to emphasize God's truth, as Wilson does in his book. Knowing that hurt people hurt others has actually changed the way I look at and interact with everyone I've come in contact with here recently. ReferencesWilson, DD (2001). Hurt people Hurt people.
