Mental well-being is much more than just the absence of mental illness. Mental well-being encompasses positive affect, life satisfaction, psychological and social well-being. (Mitchell, 2011) Seligman posits that happiness is determined by a combination of a defined range (50%), intentional activities (40%), and circumstances (10%). (Mitchell, 2011) This shows that Amanda can intentionally increase her happiness by up to 40%. An activity like keeping a gratitude journal can promote happiness. This habit could again be encouraged thanks to motivational interviews (Rollnick and Miller, 1995) and the SMART objective.
