This book is about labels and the fight against those labels. How can anyone succeed in life if they are constantly berated and made to feel worthless? Social interaction focuses on individual interactions between people and problems arise when we attach labels to various issues. In class we talked a lot about labels and the impact they can have on a person. Labeling people can lower their self-esteem and make them feel worthless. This project was not just about stereotypes related to teenage pregnancy. It was also about widespread rumors and statistics related to stereotypes. One of the videos Gaby showed during her presentation showed children being whispered about and left out. It also revealed some possible consequences of stereotypes and rumors, such as depression, drug use, stress, violence and even death. About 2 million teenagers attempt suicide each year and about 700,000 die. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among people aged 15 to 24. There is a need for continued education about the effects of stereotypes and labels on children and adolescents and their impact on their lives. This book supports everything we learned in our Minority Studies class about labels and the effect they can have on a person.
