  • Essay / Mass hysteria today and in Arthur Miller's The Crucible

Arthur Miller's play, The Crucible shows the absolute control that the ego can have not only over the individual but also over a Company. We may think that witch hunts are a confection of the past because as a modern society we are not so easily victimized by schemes such as those created by the young girls of Salem. This is false, however, because in my short life I have found that we have been programmed to fear terrorists, Ebola, and even ourselves. A large majority of these concerns have been answered by our media, our elected officials and our religious institutions. As I sought to fully free myself from these fears, I came to better understand that love and wisdom are the essential tools for defining our own paths. Therefore, my goal is to love unconditionally while sharing my own wisdom with those who have a common interest; This is my path to liberation. Using the events that occurred in The Crucible and relating them to our current culture, I will argue that we always live in a state of fear and always struggle to progress beyond that level. The constraints imposed by social norms can create a feeling of isolation not only from other humans, but from nature and even from oneself. Our population has been divided, divided and mashed according to a plethora of categories which include: gender, sexuality, economic status, "race", ethnicity, religion, political party and many others Again. It's truly amazing how someone is able to identify in these neighborhoods, because these classifications don't allow one to simply exist. Osho encourages people to leave these institutions, because they are “cages” with “beautiful names” (Osho 117). However, once one consciously makes... middle of paper... quark or quark can exist and "disappear" in the blink of a millisecond, my shared existence must be the same . My knowledge and opinions must follow those of the universe, encompassing the capacity to always be in constant evolution.
