  • Essay / Getting to know my students - 687

During this internship, so far, I have worked with three students. Two of them I worked with a little more than the third person. I discovered a lot about each of them and did my best to make the learning materials tailored to their reading levels and interests. Here's what I found:Student number one is very talkative and always expresses his opinions (appropriate or not). He is also very eager to work and has shown that he is very interested in what we do. He told me that he loved working on cars and that it would be really cool to incorporate them into his project. He told me his future goals included going to a college in Texas to get certified to work on cars. He's actually originally from Texas, but his family moved here for work. He is Hispanic and remains particularly close to his culture. He played many sports at school. On my second day working with him, he mentioned that if someone completes it, they must touch the garment they completed, otherwise it will be cursed. At first I wasn't sure I believed him, but his teacher seemed pretty serious when he told me to be aware of it. I also learned that as a tenth grader, he is expecting his first child this year and the reason he is in the center is because of aggression issues. The second student is much more relaxed. He is also Hispanic and said his culture and traditions are very important to him. He is also originally from Texas and plans to return one day. I found out that he is in 6th grade and is a good reader. He asked me to allow him to read more, but does not hesitate to ask for help when needed. This student is very reserved in his participation and does not express much initiative in doing his homework. There seems to be a lot more...... middle of paper ...... the second book is Discovering Drawing by Rose and Mahan-Cox. I use this one if I think we need more information. My final source is a set of worksheets that correlate with the elements and have additional reading to remind students of what they are reading. When reading with these students, I tried to assess how well the students read independently. I did this by asking them to read a small segment on a page and I watched them. I could tell when they weren't reading. I have found that these students do very well reading aloud and discussing what they have read immediately afterward. I use it, then apply it to worksheets in one day, then revise it next time. I plan to use the cube I created to review items before we begin our projects. Using it, I think it will really help my students get active while applying the terms we cover in a fun and exciting way..
