By joining this online course, I thought I knew everything there was to know about English and the writing process. My previous English class focused solely on the process of writing well-structured five-paragraph essays. I thought this course would go in the same direction. I've always struggled with writing assignments, so taking this class made my previous English class seem like a walk in the park. However, this course took me out of my comfort zone and helped me significantly improve my writing through assigned essays and various mini-assignments. As a writer, I now feel confident in developing a strong thesis statement, successfully integrating sources and citations into my writing to help prove a point, and using Naturally, I'm not a great writer, it takes me days to develop what I believe I am. the “perfect” paper. I need to do various overviews and really think about what I'm going to discuss. I learned this semester that if you have good sentence structure and vocabulary, you can write less and still get the point across in your argument. Because I tend to overthink my assignments, I don't use proper sentence structure and I write excessively. In one of the first assignments I wrote for this class, I felt like my sentences were weak and that I was repeating myself in every paragraph. I was also wandering into the first person point of view without realizing it. Throughout the weeks of this course, I used the quizzes, textbook, feedback, and assignments to my advantage and tried to expand my vocabulary to make my sentences more complex and stronger. I could tell that my writing had improved significantly in my research work because I was using stronger words that helped create an academic tone throughout my writing. Overall, my sentence structure isn't perfect and it's something I still need to practice with, but it has absolutely improved over time.
