“Certainly, the world without the Jews would have been a radically different place. Humanity might have eventually come across all Jewish ideas. But we can't be sure. All the great conceptual discoveries of the human intellect seem obvious and inescapable once revealed, but it takes a special genius to formulate them for the first time. The Jews had this gift. It is to them that we owe the idea of equality before the law, both divine and human; of the sacred nature of life and the dignity of the human person; of individual conscience and therefore personal redemption; of collective consciousness and therefore social responsibility; of peace as an abstract ideal and of love as the foundation of justice, and many other elements which constitute the basic moral furniture of the human spirit. Without the Jews, the place might have been a lot emptier” (Paul Johnson). The Jewish people have proven that they are capable of making a huge difference in the world. Although this divine difference comes from people in each movement of Judaism, the Modern Orthodox movement has taken it to a higher level. Orthodox Judaism began when G-d revealed the Torah on Mount Sinai (The American-Israeli Cooperative Enterprise, 2011). Orthodox sages believe that the Oral Torah and the Witten Torah were given to the Jewish nation in 1312 BCE. This is when they consider “orthodox” Judaism as we know it to have begun (Rabbi Lawrence Keleman, 2010). Although there are many Modern Orthodox Jews around the world, the top 10 communities are in Israel, New York, Los Angeles, Florida, Paris, Philadelphia, Chicago, Boston, San Francisco and in London (World Jewish Population, 2001).
