Essay / Observing Court Proceedings at the New Haven County Courthouse
On October 24, 2019, it was my first time visiting a court case and I observed the New Haven County Courthouse, located at 121 Elm Street in downtown New Haven for Observe the case of Morales who served time in March and was convicted in 2013. Upon entering the courthouse I was greeted by the security and asked me to remove all cell phones, laptops or anything else that could trigger a metal detector. In my opinion, the security measures were very good at this place and I felt very protected. I was full of anticipation and was quite amazed by this experience as I have never seen anything like this first hand and only on TV. I was properly dressed and didn't really blend in with the crowd of other people sitting in the courtroom. The lawyers seemed to come and go as they pleased, without any consideration or detail of the events of the meeting. The case I went to observe involved a man named Mr. Morales who was on the streets and involved in drug and prescription drug trafficking. Say no to plagiarism. In the sessions court I attended, the physical appearance of the court is similar to what I have seen on television, for example in a show I watch all the time, Law and Order Special Victims Unit. The judge sits in the center and in the presence of everyone in front. I have never been in court before; therefore, I had no idea how court proceedings were conducted outside of what I saw on television in programs like The District and many others. In the first case heard, it was about Mr. Morales who arrived handcuffed, made eye contact with a confused look towards me and my friends because we had come to observe his case. Mr. Morales was on the street when the corruption happened to him. The government wanted to dismiss him and organize a preliminary trial. Orlando police were investigating him and he was eventually arrested in Puerto Rico. He was a man who had a place to live and a place to work in his life. He violated his probation in January 2018 and his case has been going on for almost six years. The judge says more “deliberation” and that probation is not enough. Positions and ideas are coming later and regarding the sentencing schedule, a supplement for a pre-sentence report must be completed by November 13. Sentencing memo is November 22 and sentencing will take place by December 4. The government will file a motion to revoke Mr. Morales' pretrial release and his lawyer opposes it. He was heard by another judge on October 31. When I walked into the courthouse to observe my first trial, I got a good sense of how empty and quiet the room felt as I watched the trial. The judge gave Mr. Morales' lawyer a hard time for his delay in the case. At first witnessing this experience, I was surprised at how real it seemed and I was amazed at how things unfolded.
