History defines us. History is what changes both the norms of society and what is socially acceptable for any way of life. That being said, what role does the Internet and sexual deviance play in our history and how have they evolved over time? What is acceptable in terms of sexual variation today compared to our past as a world and as a society? Times change, and so do views on what is sexually acceptable. However, some forms of sexual deviance, such as pedophilia, will never be acceptable by the standards of human decency. Sexual deviance is defined by Wikipedia as a paraphilia. This term is used to describe sexual objects or images that cause sexual arousal. Paraphilia “involves sexual arousal and gratification toward atypical or extreme sexual behavior” (Wikipedia) and considered abnormal by the standards that society has set at that time. as society has progressed in its acceptance of sexual orientation and gender identity. Part of this is due to advocacy, but the majority of these changing views are due to internet pornography. The Internet is opening up the world in ways never seen before. The privacy and confidentiality of what happens in a home regarding sexual relations is no longer intimate and private, but is available to the world through webcams and social media. Most people view this as harmless and use them as an outlet for sexual exploration and endeavors. However, other people use the Internet and sexual pornography for a completely different reason. Pedophiles and rapists use these forms to lure their next victim into their clutches. As our technology advances for the so-called betterment of humanity, so does the exploitation of what was intended for good. Mustanski writes that “the ultimate goal of such research (in sexual studies) will be to understand the timing and mechanism of various etiological factors. which influence sexual orientation. (Mustanski, 2002) However, sexual orientation is no longer considered sexual deviance in most cultures, such as pedophilia and rape. However, more and more studies show that there may still be a genetic link in people that triggers something in their thought processes that compels them to act on their sexual urges. Just because a person identifies as homosexual or heterosexual does not mean that they will become a sexual deviant as defined by society's current standards...
