  • Essay / Sammy's emotional evolution in Updike's 'A&P' - 724

The "stocky" young woman was the first to attract Sammy's attention. When he noticed the "stocky" young woman, he ended up scanning the older woman's crackers twice. After calming down the “checkout attendant” (as Sammy called him) and finishing scanning his groceries, he was able to get a better look at the other women. Sammy follows the women down several aisles. Sammy looks at all the women, explaining their swimsuits and thinking about their personalities. He then notices the leader of the group whom he names "Queenie", he begins to lust after Queenie. He talks about Queenie's body type and the personality he thinks she has by her behavior. As Sammy thinks about what he thinks of Queenie, he lets the reader know that he has low self-esteem because he feels like she is out of his league. He calls the prettiest girl "Queenie" because of the way she carries herself.
