  • Essay / Sustainability without environmental sustainability

Without environmental sustainability, economic stability cannot be achieved. In 2008, according to the United Nations, “the majority of the world's population lives in urban areas” (“LINKING POPULATION, POVERTY AND DEVELOPMENT”). This does not hide the fact that people still suffer from poverty, hunger and malnutrition. The problem of poverty is increasing rapidly, due to economic instability caused by overexploitation. This is why many poor children have nothing to feed their growling stomachs and nourish their dry bones. In order to end poverty and turn around the economy, we must start caring for the environment by practicing environmental sustainability. “Every second, four people die of hunger; It is estimated that approximately 27 to 28 percent of all children in developing countries are underweight or stunted” (“Global Poverty and Hunger”). When we talk about environmental sustainability, we mean a system of life in which we are able to preserve our environment without having to compromise with the resources of future generations while still managing to meet our own needs. Profitability brings economic growth and stability to our society. This is why many companies and government agencies want to make a profit and end up abusing the environment. Profitability and environmental sustainability can certainly coexist, but when we become greedy, the planet's citizens, the economy and the environment would be in great danger. Furthermore, the poor could not survive because their agricultural lands have been deforested and the rich could not survive because there are no more forests to buy and live in...
