  • Essay / Is greed good? - 931

In Oliver Stone's 1987 classic Wall Street, there is a monologue that will transcend time and will forever be associated with Wall Street and the ultra-rich. “Greed, for lack of a better word, is a good thing. Greed is right, greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through and captures the essence of the evolutionary mind. Greed, in all its forms; The greed for life, money, love and knowledge has marked the rise of humanity. This dramatic speech was delivered by Gordon Gekko (played by Micheal Douglas), a wealthy businessman who, through this speech, attempts to convey the message that greed leads to overall personal and economic growth. However, many people wonder if this is true: can greed really be a good thing? Also, is director Oliver Stone trying to make a statement about corporate America and the ultra-rich? Is greed good? well, it depends on how you look at things and who you talk to. Greed as defined by Webster's dictionary is "the selfish and excessive desire for something beyond what is necessary." Many businessmen around the world believe that greed is the incentive that drives any person to produce a product. These people believe that if we didn't have greed, no one would bother to go to school or work, because what good would that do? There would be no determining factor to make a person want to do anything. However, businessmen have a flaw in their argument: they believe that money is the only incentive for a person to do something. Their minds cannot imagine a person being generous or charitable when they cannot receive monetary compensation. They don't understand why people give their money to charity or give their time. They are incapable of conceiving that a person... in the middle of a paper... is really a bad thing, Oliver Stone sent Gordon Gekko to prison for insider trading, further adding to his argument that greed is bad, and those who are greedy will be caught. Oliver Stone uses Gordon Gekko as a symbol of corporate greed in the United States, culminating in his famous Gekko monologue. Stone, however, disagrees with the main theme of this monologue that greed is good. I also believe that greed is not good. Looking at the world, especially in this day and age, corporate bankers raking in million dollar bonuses while their companies go bankrupt, and their clients defaulting on their loans is one of the greatest acts of greed unhealthy and most disturbing that the world has ever known. I don't think anyone who lived through the past recession will ever view greed as a good thing. Greed is the inventor of injustice as well as the current executor.
